Real‑World Application of Generative AI

Education

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are commonly used by students and educators alike to complete tasks such as brainstorming, tutoring, writing and coding support, research, and studying. To further support the education industry, OpenAI has developed an additional platform specifically designed for education, called ChatGPT Edu. This tool is designed specifically for colleges and universities to use AI across campus with added security and administrative controls.

Education affects everyone, and Generative AI can provide an easier way of learning by providing students with quick topic explanations, examples to practice with, and give feedback when needed. Generative AI can also help educators by creating lesson plans, quizzes, and study material so they have more time to focus on interacting with students.

While ChatGPT and other Generative AI tools can be helpful to the education industry, it also presents significant social challenges. Instead of using AI tools to aid their learning experience, students are overelying on them to complete their work. Major concerns regarding, cheating, plagiarism, privacy, and potentially biased or incorrect information have risen.

UN Agency UNESCO urges educational facilities to implement clear guidelines on AI usage to ensure it's used in a responsible and human-centere dmanner.

Healthcare

Doctors and medical staff use Generative AI to complete administrative work like writing clinical notes, summarizing patient information, and reducing paperwork. This allows them to focus more time on direct patient care to personalize medical appointments.

Although Generative AI can be beneficial in the healthcare industry for improving efficiency and enabling personable doctor-patient interactions, it can also create serious problems. AI is prone to making mistakes and spreading misinformation, it also doesn't have access to an individual's full medical record and cannot perform an examination like a proper healthcare professional. These factors combined can negatively affect an individual's health and safety.

The medicinal center Mayo Clinic suggests that Generative AI can be useful for clinical documentation, however, it should not be fully trusted for medical advice due to its erroneous nature. Overall, ChatGPT and other Generative AI should be used as a support and not a replacement for trained medical professionals.
